We love cows, so much so that we swore off eating beef as a New Year’s resolution for 2008 — and we were doing fine until we gave in to the temptation of BBQ beef brisket at Wishbone last weekend (no regrets, by the way — it was moo-licious).
Our cow appreciation falls far short, however, of that demonstrated by our farmer friend Matt of Kingman, Ind. At a significant financial expense, Matt acquired a cow that he believes has what it takes to win first prize at the Indiana State Fair. And the lengths to which he’s going to prepare his bovine for the August competition are remarkable.
Matt has hired an Iowa State University student to live with the cow 24/7. The cow is housed in a modernĀ building that’s cooled to a constant 42 degrees. The assistant — a.k.a. the Cow Whisperer — bathes the cow three times a day with TRESemme shampoo.
We were saddened to learn that, win or lose, Matt’s cow will end up being served as steak dinner shortly after the State Fair competition. With this in mind, we plan to resume our beef-free dining throughout the remainder of 2008.
